THECALIFORNIAOFFICE (TCO) is a design office founded in 2020 by Peter Himmelstein and Jeff Soler in Los Angeles, California. TCO creates ideas, architecture and interiors. Our work is inspired by the tradition of innovative architecture that has defined Los Angeles for generations. We have a narrative process in so far as it gives logic and structure to our ideas and helps to build the identity of each project. At the same time, our work is shaped by programmatic and site constraints, context and the goals and aspirations of our clients. Our work is modern, happily eclectic and open to interpretation.
Peter brings more than 25 years of design experience to the team. He previously led an office in New York, Peter Himmelstein Architect, which completed numerous residential and commercial spaces including townhouse renovations, lofts, single-family homes, and office interiors for media and technology companies. Peter was also the Managing Director at Roman and Williams and the lead design architect on the Viceroy Hotel(now Le Meridien) on 57th Street. As Studio Director at the Rockwell Group, he led the collaboration with DS+R on the vast, innovative performance space, The Shed, and the adjacent residential tower, 15 Hudson Yards.
As Design Director at Gensler in Los Angeles, Peter led several large scale projects including planning and design of multiple new buildings at Sunset Gower Studios for Hudson Pacific Properties, a commercial tower at 401 S. Hewitt in the Arts District for Legendary Developments, and the renovation of the California Market Center(CMC) for Brookfield Properties, as well as the first tower in the Nueva las Condes development in Santiago, Chile and the Digital Media Labs for the Los Angeles Public Library.
Peter attended the GSD at Harvard University and the GSAPP at Columbia University. He is a licensed Architect in New York.
