CALIFORNIA MARKET CENTER / PROJECT INFO
PETER HIMMELSTEIN AS DESIGN DIRECTOR AT GENSLER.
ONCE THE CENTER OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY IN LA AND FONDLY REMEMBERED FOR ITS PUBLIC SAMPLE SALES, FUNDAMENTAL CHANGES TO THE BUSINESS GAVE THE NEW OWNER, BROOKFIELD PROPERTIES, AN OPPORTUNITY TO REIMAGINE THE PRIMARY, PRECAST CONCRETE BUILDINGS AS LOFT-LIKE, CREATIVE OFFICE SPACES WITH RESTAURANTS AND RETAIL AND CREATE A NEW DOWNTOWN DESTINATION ADJACENT TO THE HISTORIC BROADWAY THEATER DISTRICT. WORK INCLUDES A NEW PUBLIC PLAZA AND AN OPEN AIR PASSAGE WHICH CONNECTS 9TH TO OLYMPIC FEATURING EXPOSED, MONUMENTAL STEEL COLUMNS AND, AS A KIND OF GLAMOROUS COUNTERPOINT, A GRAND STAIR SUITABLE FOR FASHION SHOWS. IN ADDITION, THERE IS A ROOF DECK EVENT SPACE ON ONE BUILDING AND A LOGGIA CARVED OUT OF THE TOP FLOOR OF THE OTHER. FACADES AND INFRASTRUCTURE HAVE BEEN RESTORED AND MODERNIZED THROUGHOUT.
